How to Treat Yeast Infection in the Mouth
Yeast infection in the mouth is called oral thrush. This disease can affect adults and children as well. It is called thrush for babies and Candidiasis for adults. It is mainly caused by yeast-like fungus called Candida Albicans. The fungus is a microorganism that is normally found on the human body. They primarily thrive in dark and damp places of the body. The infection starts when there is abnormal growth of the fungus. In normal circumstances, this fungus can be found in the digestive tract and the vagina, but it can also reach the mouth and throat area.
There are a lot of reasons than can cause the yeast infection in the mouth and throat. Taking antibiotics and chemotherapy are some examples of the causes of yeast infection. They create the perfect environment for the fungus to grow rapidly. In these situations, the bacteria keeping the fungus from multiplying either must be gone or severely weakened. Other triggers for yeast infection can be poor diet, diabetes, a weakened immune system, and malnutrition. Babies and elderly people are susceptible to this disease because they have weak immune systems.
Wearing dentures that are either too loose or too tight can often lead to yeast infection. Dentures that do not fit well might damage the mouth’s mucous membrane, thereby giving the fungus the chance to enter the tissue.
One of the symptoms of oral yeast infection is the appearance of white to yellow colored discharges. This certainly will create a discomfort to adults because of the pain associated with it. They will have trouble eating and swallowing.
As with any kind of problem, fixing the root cause is always the key. If your dentures are the main reason for the yeast infection, then acquiring dentures that actually fit is the first step of the process. The next step would be to treat the symptoms and the fungus itself. They can be treated simultaneously. There are a lot of antifungal creams that not only treat the fungus, they also alleviate the soreness or the burning sensation on the mouth. Pastilles are also used as carriers for the antifungal drugs.
The treatment for this kind of yeast infection is easy and simple. However, there are cases wherein the infection is already quite severe that the use of pastilles or antifungal creams is no longer effective. The best way to solve this dilemma is to immediately consult your doctor. Yeast infection, if left untreated, is dangerous and can lead to permanent damage, even death.
